JUROR’S STATEMENT

Our lives are made and defined by the relationships we make with the lines we cross or honor (or honor by crossing). What does it mean to cross and how does that shape our humanity? What do we carry forward when we transgress what was thought to be the limits of our being? Representing points of human connection, transitions from one point of life to another, the worlds we build or break down, and the transitioning earth that tethers us, the photographs in this exhibit are an expression of our connection, our moments of intersection –each being a point of crossing. With the transformation of its entire retail space into an art gallery, Digital Pro Lab will showcase thirty photographs from 26 international, national, regional and local artists that will explore the exhibition theme: Crossing

ARTIST STATEMENT:

This photograph included as my part of the group exhibition is part of a larger series of photographs and related objects and installations whose genesis is a dream about a Bomb Disposal Expert.  The work began as a steel sculpture — a kind of line drawing in space — but as she worked, she discovered her primary material was not nine gauge steel wire, but light and shadow.  Her current work is about holding the tension between light and shadow, allowing new possibilities to unfold.

The art is her dance with the dream image. Sarah is interested in allowing the viewer pause to find their own connections with the image.

ABOUT HONORING WOMEN

Created by members of the Gentileschi Aegis Gallery Association, the exhibition “Honoring Women” celebrates women through contemporary portraiture. This particular GAGA exhibit has traveled Texas, going as far as Fort Worth, and was first shown in 2016 at the Guadalupe Cultural Center in San Antonio. There, Sister Maria Eva Flores happened to see it and expressed a wish to bring it to OLLU where she taught, thinking the student body would benefit from the exposure. After her death, her sister, Carolina Flores, made it her mission to see that wish actualized. It is our great honor and privilege to have obliged.
